High Tech Skilled Labor (or, living a lie)
I was having a coffee with Dustin yesterday and we started talking about programming and coding and all of those sorts of things and it hit me. I’m basically living a lie. And I don’t mean that I’m deceptive, or tell people things that are not true or that sort of thing. Its that I wonder whether the gap between me and other non-coders isn’t mostly imagined by them and...

Joel Klein vs. New York Teachers Union (The New... →
Its frightening to think that there are unions more absurd and harmful than the Chicago Teachers Union (which I say as the loving and grateful son of a lifetime CPS and union member), but holy shit, New York’s system seems unbelievably more awful. All of which
makes it even more impressive that some teachers are dedicated and caring enough to do a good job despite being faced with a...

We’re living the future! First promising developments to sweet cancer treatments and now this. I’d bet dollars to locknuts that some of us will never die.
The National Endowment for the Art of Persuasion? →
If this account isn’t a huge exaggeration, this all seems pretty f-ed up. I know intelligent people disagree on whether the NEA is a good idea or not (I’m in the ‘not’ category), but using the NEA’s funding to promote artists and works that support political ends seems unequivocally terrible, no?

Budget Travel has published a great slideshow of some of the world’s weirdest hotels, including a suite made from a refurbished 727, a lodge that lets you sleep in lion cages, and this odd structure in Vietnam:

Reason.app! (or, item 2 of 4 falls)
So, another one of those items I didn’t want to jinx before has come through! Unless something unforeseeable happens, I’ll be developing an iPhone app for Reason Magazine, of which I am a proud subscriber!
Next three months
So, the first of those big things I mentioned a while back have finally been settled, and in a good direction. I’m going to be living in Vienna for the next three months! I’ll be living with an Austrian law student named Nina, I’ll continent doing web and iPhone programming, and I’ll be taking German three hours a day while I’m there.
One of my main goals while...

A cool friend of mine from Boston just started a tumblr. If you like thousands of kitten pictures, with some noise rock links mixed in, you’ll love it.
He also posts about other things.
Ultimate Fun
I’m at my folks home in Chicago South suburb #1 Flossmoor for some reasons, and those reasons aside, I’ve found something thats WAY more fun than I could ever guess. I’ve been playing Wii Fit with my Mom a bit, and not only is it a blast, its way more fun than I’ve had playing any game in a long time. Definitely more fun than Fallout 3, than Psychnoauts, then Painkiller...
Why hasn't this movie been made yet
Kids love vampires now right? And part of vampire lore is that vampires don’t age, right? So how about a movie about a woman who is bit when she is pregnant, and the fetus never ages. The tagline: Now she’s sucking for two
I Guess thats How We're Made, Epilogue
Last week I put up this post about a song I wrote called “I Guess That’s How We’re Made”. And like I said in that post, the song is based off of a phrase Irvin Yalom uses in the book “Love’s Executioner” when consoling a bereaved parent.
Well, last night I emailed the song to Dr. Yalom, along with a bit of text explaining why the phrase struck such a...
District 9 (or, this shit is bananas)
If you’re going to see this movie, you might not want to read this, since I give it all away. But then again, on second thought, you absolutely should read this and save your money to see a different, better movie.
I just saw District 9 with James, and let me tell you all this, don’t make the same mistake I did! I can’t imagine why the movie has a score of 81 on Metacritic. The movie starts...

Harvard Sq. Crazies
I’m waiting for a train at the Harvard Sq. stop and there is this guy singing a Billy Joel cover for change. But, some things:
he’s singing very loud in what, if it were closer to tune, would be double falsetto (seriously, it’s incredibly high)
he keeps licking his lips in between verses in a manner I can only describe as criminal
here is the kicker: the song is “Piano...
The Best Three Song Run in my iTunes Collection
At this moment at least, there is no contest. Its the last three songs on Crimes by The Blood Brothers. “Wolf Party,” “Celebrator,” and “Devastator” back to back are so crushing and exciting. If you don’t like the Blood Brothers’ double screaming voices style, these songs probably won’t do much to change your mind, but the screaming is...

Ya’ll better watch it. LOLlapalooza on Fuse network. This saturday + Sunday encore performance. I spent the last 4 days Color correcting it (secretly) until 4:30 am. Did i mention the Yeah Yeah Yeahs play a heart inspiring take on ‘Zero’. Killer. (the Killers are also in it!)
Hey Andy,
Just wanted to say congrats on getting the project out the door. Thats seriously cool stuff...
Formbug - Now on Firefox AddOns
Formbug is an extension to Firebug I wrote a while back to make it easier to test form intensive sites. Someone recently sent me an email, asking me to put it on the Firefox Addon Page page, and I got around to. We’ll, its now been downloaded 333 times, which, I realize isn’t a big number in internet terms, or really even numeric terms, but still, it feels pretty good. Its...

Kenneth Gladney, the conservative activist who claims to have been savagely beaten by union thugs (he was not) at a town hall in St. Louis about health care, is now accepting donations toward his medical expenses because he was laid off recently and has no health insurance.
Can we just rename the health care bill the “Justice for Kenneth Gladney”...
Tyler Cowen and Will Wilkenson on Blogging Heads
The Economy of Attention
I’m watching this episode of BloggingHeads.tv and its fascinating. This episode is about Tyler Cowen’s new book, called “Create Your Own Economy.” Its very interesting and worth watching, but here are a few thoughts that will definitely stick me with me for a while.
As the economy gets increasingly specialized (a phenomenon both pushed and...

Stuff is in the works
I haven’t been blogging much. I’ve got a couple of exciting projects just on the cusp of being certain, and I don’t want to jinx them by getting too excited, too talkie, too mentally committed to them until hands are shook, papers are signed, contacts are emailed, etc., but until things become 100%, I’ll just say this:
Today I accidentally put my head phones in the...

After thinking about it...
After thinking about it, I guess my reaction to this woman is just proof of how maleable and dependant our feelings are on others, despite how much we might like to think we’re in control and autonomous. I mean, despite being rejected, I feel like $1,000,000 right now. Which is just another, more pleasent way of recognizing that this woman’s reaction was the determining factor in my...
Life is strange
I just spent the last 1.5 hours dancing with a woman who, once the lights came up, told me that she was, quote, “very married,” and quote, “very sorry she was.”. Who knows how honest that statement was (she did have a ring on her finger), but I’ll say this, that bar will always have a particularly positive stain on my self-esteme.
Boston, you’re looking pretty...
