Just because there is never a bad time to share this masterpiece, he is a song Mark wrote in high school, called “Let Change Be Your Home.”  I hadn’t listened to it in a while, but even just listening to it now kinda chokes me up a bit.  Its some serious, Rumi style sage knowledge in there.

Lines like “enjoy the days that come and let them go” or “when I fell out of the womb… you hugged me, and made me wonder, if this was all a blunder, if this is all just wondering” and “oh lord, unjar me from the past, these memories won’t last, and they get me all off kilter!” feel smart and comforting to me the same way things like “This is Water” or Montaigne or “In the Aeroplane over the Sea” feel comforting.

Thanks Mark!

Is this a political ad?   It looks like a weird reboot of the Brady Bunch…

Today Mark, Xingjiang and I did the Lakeview Polar bear Plunge.  I don’t know why this looks so photoshopped, but this is a real life human picture.  After we jumped in the water for 10 seconds, we were non-verbal for another 5-7 minutes while we reheated.  All and all though, a great time.  And huge points for the brave dudes and ladies who wore speedos and bikinis.  Thats a level of masochism I’ll never live up to.

Announce: Smartqueue Views (Drupal 6 Module)

Here is another useful module I put together for a client’s site.  The more I think about it the more surprised I am that something like it didn’t already exist.  I can see reusing this on lots of sites, so I hope someone else might find it useful).

About

Note: This module does not provide the ability to display smartqueues through views. That functionality already exists in the core Nodequeue module. This module allows for creating and limiting subqueues based on views.

A module to allow for creating subqueues for nodes specified by a view. The module further, optionally allows for further filtering the nodes that can be assigned to each of these subqueues with a further view, which is provided with the nid of node that owns a given subqueue.

Usage

After enabling the module, create a view (“view a”) that returns a field of nids. Then create a new subqueue by clicking on the “add view generated queue” tab in the nodequeue admin panel. Select your newly created view in the “View for deciding which nodes have subqueues” field.

Optionally, if you want to limit the nodes that can be added to these subqueues beyond by content type, of you can create a second view (“view b”). This second view should return a set of nids. This second view will be provided a nid as an argument, which can also be used to further limit the results. When editing the subqueue, set this second view in the “View for which nodes can be added to these subqueues” field.

Now, whenever you view a node returned by “view b”, you’ll see the “nodequeue”, tab, indicating that this node can be added to one of the subqueues that belong to one of the nodes returned by “view a.”

In case you didn’t know, every week I host a podcast on tech, economics, and policy called Surprisingly Free. Today we reached our 100th episode and, of course, it’s a clip show. It has some of the best from the last 99 shows. Give it a listen, subscribe in iTunes, reblog this, and Tweet about it. Thanks!

A huge congrats Jerry!  For anyone not yet listening but interested in tech policy, do yourself a favor and check it out!
